DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Northwood University (Fla.) men's and women's tennis teams participated in the 2013 USTA/ITA Regionals, hosted by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, in Daytona Beach over the weekend.
In the men's singles draw, two Seahawks players advanced past the first round of play. Senior Nikita Borodatov (Belgorod, Russia) recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win over Josh Rosner of St. Thomas before falling to Miguel Lopez Gomez of Embry-Riddle in the second round. Junior Jacob Aplund (Lund, Sweden) registered a victory in the first round, defeating Jose Suger of Embry-Riddle, but then lost to Nicolas Etienne of St. Thomas, 6-1, 6-1.
Senior Diego Ortega (Vitoria, Spain) won his first round play-in match against Alwin Leyser of Webber International, 5-7, 6-2 & 10-5, and then dropped a first round match to Darnell Squbin of SCAD-Savannah, 6-1, 3-2 (Ret.). David Uquillas dropped a first-round play-in match to Luke de Caires of Embry-Riddle, while Ernesto Laborda fell to third-seed Julian Ramiez of Warner University in the opening round.
In men's doubles, the pair of Ortega and Borodatov won their first round play-in match, 9-7, over Filho and Cedeno of Webber International, and then downed the team of Spurill and Weil of St. Thomas in the first round, 8-5. In the second round, Ortega and Borodatov fell to the top-seed team of Felix and Zmak of Embry-Riddle. Laborda and Uquillas defeated de Caire and Verberne of Embry-Riddle in the first round, 9-7, and then lost to second-seeded Frandji and Ramirez of Warner, 8-0, in the second.
In the women's singles, second-seeded senior Justyna Wojcik (Vancouver, B.C., Canada) earned a first round bye, defeated Meena Bennett of Embry-Riddle, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round, but was upset by Anna Gotz of Embry-Riddle in the quarterfinals. Junior Ivana Vlakic advanced to the quarterfinals with victories over Claudia Sequera of Webber International and sixth-seed Maja Plavsic of SCAD-Savannah before falling to fourth-seed Hui-l Huang of Embry-Riddle, 6-7, 6-2 & 6-1. Junior Adelaide Wood (Montreaux, Switzerland) tallied a 6-2, 6-2 win over Monique Frandji of Warner, then fell to Maria Barragan of SCAD-Savannah. Junior Valentina Souki (El Tigre, Venezuela) defeated Ana Gonzalez of Embry-Riddle, 6-3, 6-2, and fell to third-seed Theresa Schmaus of SCAD-Savannah, 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Melanie Snowberger (Vero Beach, Fla.) took down Ana Dominguez of SCAD-Savannah, 6-0, 2-6, & 10-4, before losing to Huang , 6-1, 6-0 in the second round. Junior Julia Ferraz (Pelotas, Brazil), sophomore Livia Toth (Eger, Hungary), and Julia Cusumano were dealt first round losses in singles play.
In the women's doubles draw, three of the Lady Seahawks pairs registered first round victories. The team of Snowberger and Cusumano captured an 8-5 win over Viteri and Dominguez of SCAD-Savannah, then fell to the top-seeded team of Huang and Marova of Embry-Riddle, 8-0. Wojcik and Vlakic defeated Ryan and Sequera of Warner before dropping their second round tilt, 8-2, to Barragan and Arcila of SCAD-Savannah. Toth and Souki beat Bennett and Montero of Embry-Riddle, 8-5, in the first round, and then fell to second-seeded Plavisc and Schamus of SCAD-Savannah. The team of Wood and Ferraz fell to third-seed Bongiovanni and Kovalska of St. Thomas in the opening round.
The men's and women's tennis squads will return to action when they kick off the 2014 spring schedule.
