BIOGRAPHY
Full BiographyWhen Northwood University began its search for the first head men's basketball coach in school history, they had many traits that they hoped their selection would encompass. He must be a teacher of the game, he must have a track record of helping student-athletes grow and succeed both on and off the court and he must have the ability to sell a brand-new program to the community. They got all those traits and more when they named Rollie Massimino Director of Basketball Operations and Head Men's Basketball Coach on Sept. 1, 2005.
Best known for leading Villanova to the 1985 NCAA National Championship, Massimino brings with him over 50 years of coaching experience at the high school and collegiate levels to the Seahawk program.
Now in his fifth season as basketball coach at Northwood, Massimino has a resume that puts him on par with some of the greatest coaches in the game. In 2006-07, Massimino worked his magic again, leading Northwood to a 23-9 record and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament in their inaugural season. In 2007-08, the Seahawks improved to 27-8, and reached the NAIA National Tournament Quarterfinals. During the 2008-2009 season, the Seahawks had their best record yet with a 27-6 mark and again reached the NAIA National tournament, finishing in the top 16. Last season, Massimino tied his school record set the previous year with a 27-6 record and again reached the NAIA National Tournament. During the course of last year, he reached a 100 wins as the coach of the Seahawks with a 74-72 win over Warner University on February 13th.
In 35 seasons as a collegiate coach, Coach Mass has posted a remarkable 619-420 record, ranking him 51st all time in wins among coaches with at least 10 years of experience at the NCAA division I level. His 515 career wins also make him one of only 17 coaches in NCAA history with more than 500 career victories and a national championship to his credit.
During his career, Massimino has collected numerous coaching accolades. Following the 1985 season, he was tabbed as the National Coach of the Year by both MacGregor Sporting Goods and Playboy Magazine. An eight-time Coach-of-the-Year honoree by various leagu
